Thorens TD-124 Turntable

Apr 25, 2026

Back in the days of yore, the garage sales and estate sales in Burbank and the San Fernando Valley were so good, I once heard the area referred to as “The Valley of the Kings.” Nobody had more disposable income than people in Southern California back in the 1950s and 1960s. The junk that turned up back then was legendary.

One Saturday morning, I was making my rounds of all the sales when I saw this beautiful , Swiss-made 1960s Thorens TD-124 turntable sitting in the lawn of a Burbank tract home. It was still in its original THORENS shipping box. It had a beautiful blonde wood plinth—a very rare factory option. When I asked the price, they told me it was $25. I took it home and started playing records on it, and kept playing records on it. Today, I’m still playing records on it. And it sounds so good….

All these years later, it’s still the best twenty-five bucks I ever spent.
