Today was another day of goofing off in one of my favorite parts of the world… That weird no-man’s-land in between San Francisco and Portland. Today we drove from Eureka up to Klamath and spent several hours at one of my dream destinations: TREES OF MYSTERY.
Gawd, I love this place. It’s a tourist destination that goes back to 1946, when a couple discovered a bunch of weird redwood tree formations up on a hill and decided to make a roadside attraction out of it. Since then, the place has expanded and become hugely popular. There’s a giant Paul Bunyan with Babe the Blue Ox in front of the place (I’m really happy to report that Paul has been restored and now has a waving mechanical hand, as well as somebody inside, talking to people walking up in a Paul Bunyan voice-great!).
There’s a skywalk similar to the one that we went on at the Eureka zoo today, except much higher and the bridges between trees were MUCH scarier! There’s also a ski-lift-type skyway that flies above the trees, but it was broken today. I didn’t mind, I really like walking around in the dark Oregon forest, checking out every little weird natural formation and every weirder tree carving or sculpture.
This place rules. The only thing that really sucks about it is that all of their merchandise is priced so that only tech bros can afford it. They did have a killer display of all their original 1940s and 1950s merchandise— now THAT’S the stuff I really wanted to buy!
Then we hit the road, drove along the beautiful coast up by Crescent City, cut through the mountains and the forests until we wound up in Ashland, Oregon. Tomorrow we play the Oregon Shakespeare Festival concerts on the green, 6:30 to 7:30 PM. If you’re close by, hope you can make it!
