Here’s a link [webmaster’s note: It’s since been deleted even from the Internet Archive] to the 60 Minutes story on the notorious El Salvadoran torture prison CECOT that got pulled by the new right-wing owners of CBS, Larry Ellison and Bari Weiss.
For one thing: If you aren’t deeply alarmed by the loss of our freedom of the press, you should be. We’re literally seeing all the media in this country swallowed up by billionaires—all the major news networks, the social media platforms, radio stations—and if it doesn’t suit their pro-Trump, right-wing mindset, Trump will try to pull their FCC license, or use political force to get someone he doesn’t like (like Jimmy Kimmel) fired from the airwaves. This is authoritarianism, plain and simple. It’s fascism, here at our doorstep.
Secondly, this 60 Minutes piece on CECOT that Bari Weiss and Larry Ellison pulled because they didn’t like how it portrayed the Trump administration and their anti-immigration blitzkrieg is DEEPLY disturbing. OK, maybe you hate brown people. Maybe you somehow believe that Latinos in your community are making you less safe. These beliefs are wrong, but whatever. What’s going on here, deporting people with no criminal record to a torture prison in a third country that these people don’t come from, is our American shame—this is our concentration camp shame, in twenty-first-century form. Not only is it a violation of international law, it’s a violation of everything that America is supposed to stand for. This prison is for violent offenders, the very worst of the worst. And yet only 3.1% (that’s THREE point ONE percent) of the ones sent to this hellhole to be tortured, sexually abused, and psychologically damaged have any kind of violent criminal record.
If you think this is justified, or funny, or “they’ll get what they deserve,” I’m not going to be one of those social media people that says UNFRIEND ME NOW. No. I’ll look you square in the eye and say “Shame on you. What the hell is wrong with you. These are people. Trump is using them as political pawns so he can look tough on Fox News. This is a national shame. This is not who we are. Shame on you.”
