I was happy to finally get an invite to one of the “Gold Star breakfasts,” a long-running tradition here in Los Angeles with veterans of the audio engineering and recording studio world. My neighbor and friend Kevin Gray, who is also one of the top mastering engineers in the world, invited me to come this morning.
I was happy to finally meet ninety-eight-year old Dave Gold, the “Gold” in Gold Star Recording Studios (the other half was Stan Ross, who is deceased now, but I met him several times at various Eddie Cochran events). Dave Gold who was the guy who built the equipment, including the legendary Gold Star echo chambers, used on records by Phil Spector, the Beach Boys, and many others.
Also present was ninety-eight-year-old Dick Burns, who worked as an engineer not only at Gold Star, but also Electro-Vox, A&M, and just about every studio in town.
Larry Levine’s wife was there, and other relatives and friends who once had an association with Gold Star Studios. And of course my neighbor Kevin Gray has been cutting records at the very top level for more than fifty years. There’s a good chance that a significant portion of the records in your record collection were cut by Kevin (including my records for HighTone/HMG back in the day, that’s how I met him). Quite a group of luminaries! Thanks for the invite, Kevin!
