I’ve posted before about my friend and neighbor Jerry Case, the former Texas Playboy and jazz guitarist. Jerry came over to my house recently and we shot a big interview about his long career and did some picking, too.
Jerry started out as a child prodigy in Paris, Texas, playing rockabilly and Chet Atkins style at the age of eleven. As a teenager, he played with Texas legend “Little” Joe Carson and was even there the night Joe got killed in a car accident outside Wichita Fallas, Texas. By the time he was twenty, he was touring with Bob Wills in the very last touring lineup of the Texas Playboys. For the last forty years, Jerry has lived in Los Angeles, mostly playing jazz gigs. Even though he was a local, it was only last year that I learned that a bona fide Texas Playboy was living near me. We’ve hung out a number of times and become good friends. What a treasure trove of stories, guitar playing, and music Jerry is!
This is a really long video—maybe not for everybody, but I thought it was important to document Jerry’s history and some of his great playing. Every time we sit down together, I learn something new on the guitar. Maybe by the time I’m an adult, I’ll know 5 percent of what Jerry knows.
