Wow, Dave Stuckey and I had a fun evening tonight—we went to go visit former Texas Playboy Jerry Case and his wife, Maxine! Jerry regaled us with tales of the early days playing in Texas and Oklahoma, and the year he spent touring with Bob Wills. (And the night he played bass for Merle Travis!) We had dinner (and Maxine was so sweet, she even put a candle on a little chocolate cake for my birthday), and then we got out the guitars and started pickin’. Jerry is a monster picker! He has an amazing old Epiphone archtop that he converted to a seven-string (with a seven-string original ! D’Angelico tailpiece), and boy, he was playing great!
Now that Dave and I know (took us long enough) we have a genuine Texas Playboy living in our neighborhood, we are going to get him out to do some pickin’ with us! A great night, and a reminder of the never-ending surprises that the city of Los Angeles has lurking around every corner.
