Scully Lathe Work

Nov 19, 2025

Been doing some much-needed maintenance and repairs on my Scully lathe the last few days. The first (long) video details the steps they used in the 1930s/1940s for reducing vibration, a crucial element of using electric motors to cut sound into a blank lacquer disc (originally, these lathes were made to cut on wax discs!). The rest of the photos detail recovering the turntable platter—it had a nasty felt mat on it when I got it and it has worked fine, but I finally got around to putting the proper worsted wool on it. Had to track down some real stuff with no polyester fibers in it; it’s what they used on high-end pool tables back in the day. Lastly, getting the lathe set up with a Grampian head/Gotham cutting amplifier setup for (hopefully) the best-sounding mono cuts you’ve ever heard. Fun stuff!
