Nathan Hernandez and Fred Stuart

Feb 26, 2023

Had a fun visit today with Nathan Hernandez and Fred Stuart—the same Fred Stuart from the early, legendary Fender Custom Shop. We discussed guitars, steel guitars, and more guitars, and dug out some git-fiddles for perusal and edification. I also dug out my replica “Von Gallion” P-Bass, built by Fred Stuart a couple of decades ago based on a one-of-a-kind Fender Precision bass made in 1954 for a Fender employee/Western musician of the same name.

I didn’t know this, or maybe I forgot, but Fred told me that he also made a few “Rex Gallion” (Von’s brother, also a Fender employee) Stratocasters, the same finish with the same gold hardware. Two of his Rex Gallion Strat replicas wound up with David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. The bass, he said, was the only one ever made in this particular finish and electronic combination. Fred also had some great stories about seeing Merle Travis, Phil Baugh, and a host of other great players back in the day! Thanks guys!

I threw in a photo of Duncan because he really tried to bite Nathan, but he has no teeth to speak of, so he was all tuckered out trying to gum him to death and had to go lie down…
